Love cheese but can’t handle dairy? Is your body betraying you? Though there are plenty of people out there who will eat through the lactose-intolerance-induced pain to get their cheese fix, there are other options to consider—like ones that are made without dairy products. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in trying your hand at making, you’re in luck: Saturday, June 20th, there is a free online class on making dairy-free cheese.
Dairy-free cheese is a thing
Look, we know that “dairy-free cheese” sounds like an oxymoron. And if you’re used to eating traditional cheese made with dairy o’plenty, you’ll probably notice that these vegan cheeses don’t taste exactly like their lactose-laden friends from the refrigerated case at the grocery store. But, like any cheese (or other kind of food for that matter), a well-made dairy-free cheese can be pretty delicious. And since cashews are used as the base for some of these cheeses, they come with this satisfying, deep nutty flavor that can result in you absent-mindedly eating an entire container of with it crackers without realizing it.
Anyway, whether you can’t eat cheese made with dairy, or simply enjoy the vegan versions too, you may have considered trying to make these cheeses on your own. Like many cooking projects, this one can seem pretty daunting—especially if you don’t usually spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Either way, we should (still) be staying at home as much as possible these days, so there’s no better time to get into cheesemaking of any type.

Chef Maggie Wescott of Alternative Dish Health Coaching is behind this course. In it, you’ll learn how to make three simple dairy-free cheeses: stretchy cashew mozzarella, creamy dairy-free queso and tofu ricotta.
